A microchip feeder controls which pet can reach food. A timed feeder controls when food becomes available. A gravity feeder replenishes an open bowl. These are different mechanisms, so choose according to the problem you need to solve.
Correction: the Arf Pets, Petmate Pet Café and PetSafe 5 Meal products listed in the earlier version of this article are alternatives, not a shortlist of three microchip feeders. This page now distinguishes them. It does not present new hands-on testing or a new product ranking.
What a microchip feeder does
The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder manual explains how its lid recognises a registered pet’s compatible microchip or RFID collar tag. You fill the bowl yourself. It does not dispense a newly measured serving from a hopper at a scheduled time.
For the model’s setup and limitations, read our SureFeed guide. Check compatibility before buying and introduce the lid using the product’s training instructions. Observe the pets together: another pet may still try to approach an open bowl.
How the earlier alternatives differ
Arf Pets automatic dispenser: check the exact model
The earlier entry described a timed dry-food dispenser. A timer or locking hopper lid is not evidence of microchip recognition. Confirm the exact model and its dispensing instructions with the manufacturer.

Petmate Pet Café: gravity feeding
The manufacturer identifies the Pet Café as a gravity feeder. Food replenishes the bowl as it is eaten. It does not recognise a microchip, schedule separate meals or reserve food for one cat.
View the existing Pet Café retailer listing. Check the capacity and cleaning instructions for the size offered.

PetSafe 5 Meal: a timed tray
PetSafe’s 5 Meal scheduling instructions describe a timed feeder. You fill its compartments before use. It does not identify the cat eating from the exposed compartment.

Choose by feeding need
- Keeping pets’ food separate: investigate selective-access models and monitor how your pets use them.
- Making a meal available at a set time: compare timed trays and dispensers.
- Keeping an open dry-food bowl replenished: understand the limits of a gravity feeder before using one.
Wi-Fi, food capacity, cleaning and power backup vary by model; they are not universal microchip-feeder features. No feeder determines the right daily food allowance or replaces daily care.
